Arte: Why is Europe getting fewer Nobel Prizes?

For decades, US universities have outpaced their European counterparts in cutting-edge research. Institutions like Harvard, Yale, and Stanford have drawn from the world’s brightest minds, consistently producing Nobel laureates. Part of the reason is that American research benefits not only from generous funding but also from stronger career opportunities. But with President Donald Trump’s assault on higher education, many US-based talents are being driven away—a shift that could play to the EU’s advantage.

This programme is produced by the European platform ARTE and available in 10 languages through the European media partnership EMOVE Hub. The hub is coordinated by ARTE and includes Balkan Insight (BIRN), Sinopsis (BIRN Romania), El País (ES), Gazeta Wyborcza (PL), Internazionale (IT), Ir, (LV), Kathimerini (GR), Le Soir (BE) and Telex (HU). The partnership receives EU-funding following DG CNECT’s call for European Media Hubs within the framework of the EU’s Multimedia Actions.
